The x-ray technician performs the mammogram using digital, strictly monitored equipment. The mammogram takes two x-rays of each breast in different positions.
To obtain a good image of the breast tissue, the breast is briefly compressed between two plates on the mammography equipment. This compressing may feel uncomfortable, sometimes even painful.
The pressure is necessary to obtain the best mammogram images using the least amount of radiation.
