Can I have a mammogram despite having breast implants?
Yes, mammograms are also possible if you have silicone breast implants. However, they may make the examination more difficult, since the implant cannot be compressed sufficiently near the glandular breast tissue to take the mammogram. The evaluation of the images may therefore sometimes be limited. A breast with an implant is compressed in a way so as to avoid damaging the shell of the implant. Women with breast implants should always disclose the implants prior to the mammogram and if possible bring along their implant certificate or a doctor's report. If the mammogram images can't be evaluated properly, you may be invited to return for a different examination.
